A talisman is an object that has been crafted for an individual to connect with a beneficial energy or the magical being it represents. During our life we have 9 power animals that walk with us and numerous guardian angels, spirit guides and elemental's in many forms guiding us in the back ground. We can get clues to what they are by the animals we like or the pets we are drawn to even certain artists work we like or specific paintings or art pieces. 

As children we often see these as imaginary friends or speaking animals only to be told to grow up and be more sensible, when our rational mind shuts the door on intuition.
